In a town sometimes referred to as "Gay-plewood" and noted for its gay-friendly program, policies (domestic partners of municipal employees are included in benefits) and population, you would've thought there had been many previous Pride celebratons.

But, no, the first-ever such event will take place at the Memorial Park Amphitheatre — “on the hill” — on  Saturday, June 25, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

According to a release from Mary Alice Carr, "Maplewood, New Jersey is a community that supports and embraces full equality. It's time for our own annual Pride Fest that celebrates, educates and activates. Join us on June 25, 2011 for the first informal Maplewood Pride picnic that will serve as a catalyst for launching a full blown Pride Fest in 2012."

The Pride Picnic will involve family friendly activities for the whole community — that includes the requisite bounce house, face painting and live music. Also in attendance will be representatives from local LGBT advocacy organizations.

Attendees are encouraged to "BYO" picnic, blanket, chairs, family, friends, kids and dogs.
